Don't be afraid to ask someone to define their words
The same word such as "Love", "Truth", or "Relationship" might mean something different to you than it does to me.
We assume we are on the same page but perhaps our definitions are different.
Healing happens when we understand each other.
And for those who enjoy etymology, to understand, is to stand under something. Or better said to be able to hold something up from underneath. In this case to be able to hold each other up!
Communication is not the key, UNDERSTANDING is! 🗝
Words are the carrier of meaning BUT we are the ones attaching the actual meaning to the word
“Unpacking” words is one of my favorite things to do with clients, relationships and the people close to me. So much healing happens when we define the meaning of the words we are using.
What does health, relationship, wealth, love, god, beauty, truth actually mean to us? We go through life assuming we are on the same page but this is how trauma, regret and misunderstanding happens.
I’ve used the term “barnacles” as words that have accrued unwanted meanings to them. We must learn to purify our definitions with ourselves and with whoever we are relating to.
Understanding self and other is what we all crave
